ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND FOREWORD

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for coming and reading my blog, I hope you gain something from this blog.

Prior to the increased in the audience, I didn't expect this post to blow up from the beginning of this blog creation in which I have been trying to update this entry and keep on looking at it to improve as much as I can, but after recent revisit [26/7/20], I feel like this entry is in a mess. Hence why I decided to edit it back again and change some words that might have a different meaning than I originally intended. 

I like to thank everyone that made it this far, if you are a high school student, then you are just one step away from choosing your career path and fulfilling your dreams. Although I have been struggling whether I should make a full English entry or in Bahasa cause I'm not sure which method of delivery is the best for you and how is the narration going to be. So, I'm really sorry for using English and Bahasa back and forth.

In this post, there will be 3 SECTIONS in which I divide it into

1. Latest update and my thoughts on it
2. Outdated writings that I preserved
3. A few footnotes

 FIRST SECTION [2017-2020]

• UPDATED 3/10/2022

I met some DKHP juniors during my wildlife practical at Zoo Taiping somewhat this year and heard that DKHP now only have 6 semesters and their practical is no longer twice but only once for 6 months. So choose your internship carefully.

• UPDATED 19/2/2020

I have been told that sem 6 is no longer in Serdang as the Management in Bintulu is building clinical facilities over there for Sem 6's practical and studies.

Asalnya aku tak tau pon hala tuju aku lepas SPM nak buat apa. Aku ni jenis impulsive dan nak cabar diri, suka buat benda pelik. Aku pon YOLO ah dengan DKHP ni. Batch aku batch first DVM yang kena interview, tak kisah lah kau dari DKHP ke ASPer ke, Asasi ke, Matriks or STPM. Semua kena interview sekarang. Syarat layak dipanggil ke temuduga is CGPA 3.5 untuk DKHP, yang lain aku tak pasti sangat, boleh cek dekat website Vet UPM. Tapi tak semestinya kau 3.8, kau akan dipanggil ke temuduga, tak semestinya.

Kalau untuk DKHP ni kan, kau solat la istikharah dulu ke, tanya kawan-kawan ke, memang betul ke kau nak spend 3 tahun dalam jurusan ni lepastu ambil masa 5 tahun untuk habiskan DVM? Tengok orang lain sekarang dah kerja, kau baru terkial-kial nak masuk 1st year degree haha (aku lah). But then, why not try dulu nanti pergi la skop lain if tak minat.

What will you learn in DKHP? 

A - ACADEMIC WISE

1. You will be learning the university's subjects in the 1st year.
   
   
2. And then for 2ND YEAR, you will learn PRODUCTION&MANAGEMENT such as how to rear (ternak) chicken from chicks until you slaughter them, you will learn how to do statistics for data presentation, you will learn about skills on how to manage farms, do the paperwork to set up a farm, basic anatomy classes, meat industry production, aquaculture, types of feed and their usage in farms, nutrition.
   
   
3. Moving on to the 3RD YEAR, you will be exposed more bout the PARACLINICAL part such as the common diseases and medical term in the Veterinary Field. You will be learning on how to calculate medical drug's dosage, you will be learning on how to administer Intravenous (IV) Fluid, check on the body score of animals, see their performance, preparing yourself to clinical surgery, know parasites that may affect your livestock or pets, you will be learning physiology of animals, how to approach them, how to cast them down, how to capture, how to restrain and a lot more.
    
4. At the end of 2nd year and at the end of 3rd year, you will be going through 2 different industrial training sessions / Latihan Industri where you have to go to as an intern there for 2 months.

B- SOFT SKILLS WISE

Life skills, although it's a long journey, you will be picking up something in between the time you spend in DKHP. I picked up quite a lot and surely it's not easy but it's worth it. All the time I spent here is worth it since I know whom I can become friends with, with whom I can put my trusts in, handling programs, improving confidence and self-esteem, addressing proper title to peoples, business-related programs, and a lot more! This issue is not uncommon in the university's life. So enjoy your life as all these are obstacles to make you more mature. These skills are not be underestimated since as I said, veterinary is a teamwork effort and you got to have the attitude, you got to be a good team player and support your vet.

What can you be after graduation?

1. Vet Clinics AVO. Confront animals first hand and assist the vet in preparation for surgery, maintaining and monitoring the patient under anesthesia as well as giving medication to the patient. eg pilling or injecting.
   
   
2. Farm AVO. Various farms such as dairy cow, beef cow, broiler, duck, layer chicken, small ruminant, pig, horse. You would be managing these animals together with the vet. Administering treatments and medications to them, improving production, help them if they have trouble giving birth, and so on.
   
   
3. Wildlife AVO. Zoos, wildlife center, sanctuaries such Kuala Gandah, Orangutan Island, and DIVERSE NGO that offers help to wildlife such as Tapir, Gibbon, Orangutan and many more. You can visit this website to learn more: https://malaysianwildlife.org/volunteering
   
   
4. There are many more such as Aquaculture, Wildlife, Research Assistant, Lab Assistant, and many more.

You could have the chance to monitor horses

Furthering your studies to Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, DVM UPM/UMK

It's a 5 years journey after you end your Diploma. If you want to be a veterinarian and you have a passion for animals for a long period of time. Then maybe this DKHP is the right choice for you but be aware that only 10-15 DKHP students can get into DVM. I personally took DKHP because I didn't know this fact until the 1st half of my 1st semester. Being a vet doesn't guarantee you are a successful person. Success comes in many different forms. Some are blessed with natural beauty, some are blessed with having luxuries and money, some are blessed by attaining good results, we just need to appreciate what we have and strive on further.

Alternative Route:

• 1Y/2Y Matriculation Program 
• ASPER: Asasi Pertanian at UPM for 1 year.
• Asasi/Foundation from other Universities that have Biology in it and apply for DVM later on such as UiTM.

The disadvantage is that you must compete really strongly and struggling really hard since DVM slot is limited. But if you are like me and jumped to DKHP without any career path, then just do your best. The time you spent investing yourself in DKHP for 3 years is not wasteful.

TL;DR;

A. Do you want to get into Asasi/Matriks and work so hard to get into DVM that has a higher CGPA requirement?

B. Do you want to get into DKHP and work hard for 3 years for DVM. But if you can't get in, you can work anywhere be it a veterinary clinic, animal farm, shelter, zoo, Department of Veterinary Services (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar) when you can still apply for DVM while you are working.

SECOND SECTION [OLD ENTRY;2016]

Entri pertamaku ingin menceritakan latar belakangku sendiri yang merupakan pelajar Diploma Kesihatan Haiwan dan Peternakan (DKHP) di Universiti Putra Malaysia Kampus Bintulu Sarawak (UPMKB) ini.

Jurusan yang ambil ini jelas tertera di atas; "DIPLOMA KESIHATAN HAIWAN DAN PETERNAKAN" atau "DIPLOMA IN ANIMAL HEALTH AND PRODUCTION" ini bukan calang-calang program diploma yang senang nak masuk. DKHP merupakan jurusan atau program yang ramai orang mohon tapi tak dapat; dengan penempatan bawah 100 setiap kali intake tahunan.

SO, apa benda DKHP ni? DKHP ni biasanya akan belajar tentang kesihatan haiwan; boleh namakan lah penyakit-penyakit haiwan yang biasa berlaku, parasite yang infest or infect dekat haiwan, penyakit-penyakit yang zoonosis dan sebagainya lah. Bukan takat tu je, belajar juga macamana nak ternak ayam, itik, telur ayam, lembu kambing buat by-product susu dsbg. DKHP jugak belajar macamana nak start bisnes, smoothkan lagi penguasaan bahasa inggeris, even kemahiran ICT pon diajar bagi memenuhi kriteria graduat yang mahir IT masa ni. Well~ majikan pon nak tengok macamana kita handle teknologi untuk adapt dengan dunia maju sekarang ni kan. Dan benda yang unik untuk DKHP ni is, praktikal atau Latihan Industri dia 2 kali for 3 months roughly. Aku baru habis Praktikal @ Latihan Industri (LI) di (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) SPCA semasa cuti semester 4. Cuti Semester 6 nanti ada lagi praktikal tapi belom decide lagi nak buat dekat mana. Kahkah~

DKHP ni pon uniknya is.. kita ada 7 sem actually. 5 semester di UPMKB dan semester 6 di UPM Serdang. Yes, UPM Serdang. Sebabnya is kekurangan fasiliti dan tenaga pengajar di UPMKB untuk subjek subjek Semester 6 nanti so kena lah pergi Serdang. Kos lain xdapat pergi serdang, habis kat UPMKB je diploma huhu. Sem ke 7 is Latihan Industri, tapi bagi menjimatkan masa, sem 7 tu dipecahkan pada 2 iaitu pada cuti semester 4 dan cuti semester 6. :)

UPMKB ni berlainan dengan UPM yang merupakan induk bagi UPM sendiri. UPMKB terletak kat Bintulu, Sarawak. Ada 2 Gate; Gate Nyabau dan Gate Taman Perumahan Li Hua yang selalu student lalu untuk pergi shopping dekat Farley, Sing Kwong, pergi gerai makan dsbg nya lah macam2 ada kat sini. Nak katakan kat sini hidup xdelah lifeless sangat. boleh la selingan tu nak pergi mana-mana untuk hilangkan kebosanan haha. Dulu tak maju macam sekarang, dulu tak ada Times Square. BTS (Bintulu Times Square) ni merupakan stepping stone jugak la sbb ada wayang yang standard dengan bandar2 lain dan ada Kenny Rogers, Padini, Brands Outlet, F.O.S pun ada. Okay back to the main topic; DKHP. Apa possible future prospect dengan DKHP ni? Ke mana boleh pergi dengan DKHP ni?

Awal-awal aku masuk dulu, aku cakap kat kawan-kawan aku yang aku nak masuk jurusan tentang haiwan. Aku bukannye orang yang berlatar belakangkan keluarga yang dari agriculture or peternakan. Dulu aku sekolah agama biasa balik hari. Parents pulak kerja engineer, adik beradik pon engineer and kakak aku pergi medic. Aku bongsu terkandas dekat penternakan haha. Kawan-kawan aku pon semua go for engineer, medic, finance, agama dan sastera. Aku sorang je yang amek jurusan yang menyimpang dari ramai orang dalam circle aku, iaitu haiwan.

Well aku dari awal memang tak kisah pon apa deorang cakap sebab aku tahu apa yang aku nak. Aku takde minat yang mendalam pon actually tapi setelah lama bersama dalam bidang ni rasa best dan menarik sampai aku sendiri ada lah hasrat tu nak buat bisnes berkaitan haiwan jugak lah hahaha itu pun berkat belajar dalam jurusan ni. So jangan takut nak ceburi bidang apa pon sebab, well rezeki ada di mana-mana asalkan kita berusaha dan tak mengalah lah.

Orang kata, "masuk jurusan tu nak jadi apa?" "eii haiwan, kotor-kotor tu?" pft hahaha padahal makanan depan deorang tu macamana lah dibuatnye ek? Pergi KFC manalah datang ayam tu eh.. hmm?? I wonder

So DKHP ni boleh go for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, DVM dekat UPM dan UMK yang saya tahu so far lah untuk degree. DKHP pon boleh go for Animal Sc dekat UPM, UMS, UniSZa dan UMK. Tak silap aku, dekat UPM dia panggil Bachelor of Agriculture (Animal Science), UMS panggil Bachelor Degree in Agriculture Science (Livestock Production), UNIMAS - Bachelor of Animal Resource Science and Management, UniSZa - Bachelor of Science (Animal Production and Health). Selain tu, boleh juga go for Zoology and area dalam Wildlife. Well skop dia luas sebab DKHP merangkumi agriculture, basic medicine dan business.

For me personally I would aim for DVM lah dekat UPM Serdang. If I couldn't get in, then maybe I would apply DVM dekat UMK. If x dapat maybe go for Animal Sc dekat UPM,UMS,UniSZa and UMK. kalau xdpt jugak mana2 haha. I would go overseas. Another route untuk masuk vet @ DVM is indonesia sebab murah berbanding mana-mana luar negara yang lain. Dan RUMORS has it that kalau pergi negara luar, susah sikit nak apply practical and surgery sebab ada organization yang take action on the animal's rights untuk medical practice @ lab practice on animals. So chances untuk learn tu kurang. I'm not sure if it's true or not could be a rumor but it could be taken into consideration.
